Southern Girls - Boy Challenge

The challenge over at Southern Girls Challenge at the moment is "Boys".  My project is a canvas for my grandson Chase.  Chase is into motorcross so I wanted the canvas to reflect this. 

 
 The words are cut out of MDF. I painted them with black paint and then I covered them with crackle medium.  Over the medium I used blue and yellow paint. Once the paint had dried I covered the letters with resin.

I embossed white card with an embossing folder that looked like tyre tracks. I ripped these into pieces and glued them to the canvas.  Using black gesso I painted the canvas and using tissue I added pieces to the canvas to emulate the dirt and grass found on the motorcross track.  I then painted everything with black gesso.

 

 

Once the gesso was dry I drybrushed the canvas with two shades of brown paint and then green paint to highlight the tissued areas and to give the appearance of dirt and grass.

 

 

Now he has a great canvas for his room that reflects his interest.

Dear Santa

Time for another blog hop from Imagine If.  You can start off with Tash's Christmas layout and then pop over to view  Katrina's gorgeous Christmas project, or you can start at the Imagine If blog  and check out all of the Design Team links.

This time I have made a simple layout using a photo of my grandson Chase and his husky Rogue using chipboard elements from Imagine If.  I wanted the photo to be the star of the show so I used a chipboard page frame from Jo's Christmas range.  Then I added some other chipboard elements and a few stickers, but overall the layout is very simple and unfussy. I actually enjoy getting back to basics sometimes and this layout reminds me of my very early layouts, but sometimes less is more and using Jo's beautiful products makes it so easy to put a page together.

 

I painted the overlay and then I sprayed the finished frame with gold shimmer mist.  The background paper is Kaisercraft paper and the stickers are Glitz "joyeux noel" title stickers.

I painted the hat and the bow and glued them to the picture and then I painted the chipboard deer and Father Christmas with black paint.  Because of the wild look in Rogue's eye and the grin on Chase's face I couldn't resist having a little fun with the journaling.  It reads "I want everything on my list .... or the reindeer gets it xoxoxo Chase."

 

I think by using the chipboard elements and not adding too much to the layout I have kept the photo as the star and the chipboard and stickers complement this and add embellishment without detracting from the photo.

Imagine If 3D MDF Outhouse project

For this weeks Design Team Project I have put together a little 3D MDF Outhouse that Jo had sent me.  You can find more of Jo's 3D MDF projects here. 

Here is the finished project:

What I was trying to achieve was an out in the bush type of outhouse, a bit rough and ready.

Firstly I painted all of the pieces with black gesso, then I glued newspaper to the inside walls.

I assembled the sides and the seat of the outhouse. I then embossed some brown card with a timber pattern, cut it into strips to resemble planks and then I glued the strips to the seat, the floor and the inside of the roof. 

 

 

I also made the little toilet roll, after all what good is an outhouse without toilet paper and I added a little bit of grass growing up through the floor.  I then added a cobweb and a spider up in the corner cause all outhouses in the bush have creatures living in them.

 

 

I then covered brown card with aluminium tape and ran it through a crimper so that it would resemble corrugated iron. I painted this grey then I added brown and blue to give it the rusted faded look that corrugated iron gets after it has been out in the weather for a long time. 

 I cut up more embossed card to make "planks" for the front of the outhouse, covered the door with more corrugated card, and added a rope handle.

To finish off I added the chipboard bullrushes from Imagine If  and the kiwi from the Imagine If NZ theme kiwi set and some grass to the left side of the outhouse.  On the right hand side of the outhouse I used more grass and leaves and a Tui from the Imagine If NZ theme Tui set.

Show Time

So this weekend I am off to the Under The Mountain Craft Event in Stratford. I have been really busy at work with a big MOH audit (which we passed with flying colours) and have not had a lot of time to craft so I have been getting out all of the bits and pieces I have had laying around for a while.  Time for a big clean out.  So packed away I have found a bunch of Christmas stuff that I had made for another craft show that I did not end up attending.

Here are some little gift tags. The toilet rolls make great holders for a gift tag and a gift card.  The two father Christmas tags are made out of laminate samples from the local paint shop and the little hearts are decorated using $2.00 shop earrings.

 

These little tags are made from cards from a memory game I brought at the local $2.00 shop. I just covered them with paper and used die cut frames, stamps and some Christmas images to cover them.

This little candle is made using baby food cans

 

While these candles are decoupaged mini terracotta flower pots.

This little gift box is made out of a used tape roll and coasters and recycled Christmas ornaments

The gift basket is a recycled tuna can.

I have a some little Christmas albums.  Some are made from toilet rolls with lots of pullouts and tags. 

Others are made from recycled Christmas cards with lots of room for photos and journalling on the pullouts, tags and liftup sections in the album.

 

 

 

This next album is a simple little album made from wooden coasters.

 



Spread Your Wings

It seems that time is flying past so quickly and it will be Christmas before we know it. Jo has sent some amazing products from  Imagine If  for the Design Team to use and over the next couple of months you will get a chance to see the completed projects.  But in the meantime I have something a bit simpler for this weeks Design Team Project.  I know simple and clean is not something that I do very often but sometimes the products just dictate the project.  when Jo initially sent us products she sent some discontinued cardboard packaging with elegant flourishes laser cut into the card.  These were too pretty to throw away and hey when do I ever throw anything away?.  So I decided to make a simple album that accentuated the flourishes and I also used, quotes, chipboard and felt birds, butterflies and cardstock flourishes. In fact apart from the paper and the binding ring everything else I have used is from Imagine If.

This picture shows the gorgeous corners of the cardboard packaging and here is the rest of the album.

As I said earlier a really simple sweet little album where the pictures will become the stars of the piece.
